In this tender, nostalgic painting, Alicia Hobbs transforms a fleeting street-side puppy sale into a symbol of Myrtle’s fate. The crate of soft, pleading puppies reflects Myrtle herself—purchased in the Valley of Ashes as a disposable token of Tom’s desire, only to be discarded when her allure fades. Alicia’s gentle palette and exposed yellow underpainting radiate warmth, but beneath the surface lies a biting commentary on how innocence is commodified and purity corrupted in a world built on exploitation.
