Regal, imposing, and thoroughly convinced of her own authority, Lady Catherine makes a grand entrance. Inspired by the portraiture of Thomas Gainsborough, Tereza Horáček (London) dresses Austen’s formidable aristocrat in a voluminous pink gown and feathered hat. Her pursed lips and upright posture convey a woman accustomed to being obeyed, while fluorescent edges give the painting a contemporary charge. Beneath her grandeur lies a playful critique of social power, as Lady Catherine’s self-importance threatens to eclipse even the landscape around her.
