(Eyes) Blue Glass Tears

Sheyda Mehrara layers soft washes of blue and white across the canvas, then punctuates the surface with sewn glass beads, appearing like shimmering eyes or running tears. The work recalls the gown Gatsby once bought Lucille, but also his deeper obsession with appearances. The design of the beads—and the painting’s title—nod to Fitzgerald’s omnipresent motif of eyes, symbols of beauty, surveillance, and vulnerability. Both alluring and fragile, (Eyes) Blue Glass Tears hints at 1920s fashion while capturing the mounting sadness of the era.
