In Outside the Ballroom, Sungi Mlengeya (Arusha, Tanzania) reimagines Elizabeth Bennet’s independence through the expressive language of dance. A silhouetted woman raises her arms against a stark white background, her body emerging from an undefined space she alone can shape. Working with acrylic and fabric on canvas, Sungi captures a moment of movement and self-possession. Beyond the pressures of society and the desire to be chosen, the figure claims a more radical freedom: the freedom to choose herself.
