In Spilt Milk, Matt Mele distills one of the novel’s most fragile scenes: Gatsby’s father, overcome with grief, unable to steady a simple glass in his hand. On the edge of spilling it all, he narrowly contains his emotions as he learns of his son’s fate. The black-and-white composition turns an ordinary object into a vessel of trembling emotion—situated on the edge of a table, the glass is paused between containment and collapse.
