Ghanaian artist Benjamin Asante pulls Austen’s world into the emotional and visual language of the present. The Measure of a Gentleman considers Austen’s fascination with breeding, rank, and manners, questioning whether character can truly be judged through appearance and status. Two men embody different performances of wealth and confidence, while the grand estate behind them remains deliberately ambiguous. Benjamin’s expressive yarn collage intensifies the uncertainty, making both figures feel constructed, worn, and performed. The work seduces us with surfaces, then asks us to doubt them.
