Teetering at the edge of chance, Alice could drown in her ocean of tears. A giant goldfish signifies Alice’s vulnerability to the powerful effects of her own emotions. While we see Alice as small and precarious–her pink stockings stark against the deep blue of the water– she occupies the highest position on the canvas, representative of the power she possesses and can access, should only she wipe her tears and look up.
